Have You Noticed How Many Blog Titles Are Questions?

07/26/2011 10:19 AM

I was under the impression that blogs were a vehicle for expressing opinions, see Roger Pink's offerings. Instead, on here, they seem mainly to be a vehicle for people who have found some outlandish statement elsewhere to pose it as a serious question.

Generally, the question is unanswerable or, sometimes, the answer is yes and no and maybe. I'm thinking of titles such as, "Does Fracking Pollute Drinking Water?", there have been cases where it has, we had a case of tap water catching fire here in PA, but there are cases where it has not. A little research would provide the answer.

Re: Have you noticed how many blog titles are questions?

I see that the three recent most active blogs (other than Challenge Questions and Caption This) have all had questions as titles: Can Six Sigma Fix Government?, Is It Time for the U.S. to Start Copying China?, and Are You Ready to Ditch the Classic Light Bulb?

As you say, these Blog Title Questions are not really answerable in the definitive, but do seem to open up some discussion.

The blogs really are nothing more than company sanctioned threads.

Just like the threads, sometimes they're good, sometimes they're not.

I suppose the thinking is, that, good or not, they are better than blank white space on a website.

Many of the Blog entries are extensions of the GlobalSpec newsletters. (get some today! they're nutritious and delicious, made without GMO products).

As Doorman noted, they are primarily designed to invite discussion; hence, the posing of questions.

I just signed up for coatings and surface engineering. We'll see if I get the newsletter. Since I switched ISPs over a year ago, I don't get updated discussion emails.....................I've tried everything. So to check my discussions, I have to go to, my subscribed discussions every time, and manually check them.

I had this problem for a while and also didn't get the Daily Digest for a time. Then they randomly started again, after CL and MG and I had given up trying to work it out.

I have noticed that the blogs by an author (e.g. Roger Pink, Milo) are more like commentaries or news on a particular subject that interest them. There is (at most blogs, anyway) feedback and discussion from the blogger about a legitimate question or comment that is placed. This interactivity is missing from the blogs mentioned by passingtongreen.

Is this a bad thing? I don't think so.

So, who wants to talk about doors? There would be some pretty lonely blogs!

Right up there with the wonders of paint application.

In the case of The Antiscience, inactivity would probably be better than interactivity on the part of the blogger. At times anyway.

If I was writing a blog about doors, I'd title it "Does the threshold really hold the thresh?" and then I'd talk about how doors were eventually added by peasants to their thatch roof cottages where the "thresh came from..."

LOL.

The often repeated story that the threshold was a barrier placed at the doorway to hold the chaff flooring in the room is mere folk etymology (paraphrased from here).

The true etymology of the word "Threshold" is shrouded in clandestinity, hidden from certain individuals and groups who do not posses the Shibboleth of the Doormen.

I bestow upon you this great gift, the Shibboleth of the Doormen:

Use this gift wisely, and it will serve you well.

If you haven't seen the film, this meaning may be lost.

No. Thresholds are really unnecessary unless you are threshing.

have you ever looked through the directory?

http://cr4.globalspec.com/browse/allblogs

which makes it a little more clear about the intension & if there is a single owner

The Global Spec blogs don't usually have an author listed & have a new entry every few weeks, to coincide with the release of the corresponding newsletter
