Electronic/RF Monitoring of Alzheimers Patients?

07/31/2011 3:17 AM

I have been out of the Electronic Monitoring Buisiness for a few years. Could anyone tell me what the state of the art of the technology is these days, and what companies are involved?

Thanks, Kevin

Hi Kevin, I am a Neurosurgeon... and honestly do not get the meaning of your question: did you mean a devices such as electronic bracelets, to locate a patient in case he/she gets lost or so?

Yes. I was the Director of an Electronic Monitoring Program for Offenders here in the Okanagan of BC Canada. I got a call from the Director of Nursing of the Penticton Hospital wanting to try out our equipment on Demintial patients. The trial bombed due to Radio Frequency interference/false alarms and a 10-20 minute lag time in getting an alarm. I am retired now and really see a need for this type of technology to keep patients at home longer and monitor them when they are in facilities. I am hoping that the technology has advanced.

Present state of the art in electronic monitoring systems are either micro-processor based or computer-based system. Depending on what parameter(s) you want to measure /monitor on an Alzheimer's patient will dictate the type and kind of Transducer(s) to be used as sensor(s).

As far electronics circuitry, it would still be the same. We are still in an analog world, so there will be a need for an A/D conversions somewhere along the line prior to the metering, trending and displaying whatever parameter(s) will be of interest to you..

As far as manufacturing companies, as in GE, HP, Gould, 3M, Nihon Khoden, Spacelabs, etc., both local and abroad can all be found in the 'net

I kind of liked the Bob & Tom Show suggestion. Try the Invisible Fence technology
