Circuit Breaker

08/07/2011 10:56 AM

Hello CR4

Recently I visited AIS and GIS. GIS had hyosung Korea switch gear. But I could not get the answer of this question. What is the difference between the Circuit Breaker installed in Air Insulated Substation and Gas insulated Substation.

I learned that Pre insertion resistor is put into the circuit breaker during closing mechanism only and used in Air insulated switchgear only. Is it correct? Please Elaborate it.

Please Answer my queries.

With Warm Regard

Well you were right to check the manufacturer first for their explanation on the difference between their products. Unfortunately, the web sites of many manufacturers are frequently lacking in fine details on their products. This can be for the very poor reason of laziness to an understandable desire to protect their product's critical value.

In this case my guess on the circuit breaker difference is the type of gas that exists between contacts. The air contact design has vents to the outside air while the gas insulated contacts are sealed with some inert dry gas (nitrogen, sulphur hexafluoride) and no vent to the outside air.

Each circuit breaker design approach has its own advantages and disadvantages. The air vented breakers must successfully interrupt with any anticipated atmospheric condition, like high humidity or high particulate (pollen, smoke) condition. At the same time the high gas pressure condition of a plasma arc from a fully loaded interrupt will have a path to vent without damaging the breaker. In contrast a gas insulated breaker can be smaller in physical size because of the known consistent gas at the interrupting contacts. However, because of the sealed nature of these breakers they can be more prone to self damage from the plasma ball.

Thank you redfred!

Both AIS and GIS are using SF6 for quenching the arc produced during opening of CB.

But In AIS I saw grading capacitor and preinsertion resistor and CB had two interrupters in series. But In GIS I am not sure whether it is two chamber or single chamber CB. And Do they have preinsertion resistor and grading capacitor or not?

What is the difference between their operation?

According to me , If both CBs are using SF6 , then their opening and closing mechanism should be same but i am confused by some of my friends statement saying GIS circuit breaker has only one interrupter and no Grading capacitor and preinsertion resistor used there.

Is it correct??

Please help me out.

Thanking You
