Difference Between Surge Arrester and Lightning System?

Can anyone explain the difference between surge arrester and lightning system?

Surge arrester discharges the lightning stroke or Surge impulses to ground protecting other critical instruments. This is the insulation coordination where surge arrester sacrifice itself for protecting other equipments in the substation. It is one of the part of the lightning protection system.

Lightning protection system also includes Lightning mast and shieldwire, where each device has its zone of protection and calculation are performed for the arrangement of LM ans shieldwire so that whole substation can be protected.

I heard People saying it DSLP.

Sorry i dont know the full form of DSLP.

Can anybody elaborate?

I believe DLSP is Direct Strike Lightning Protection. A surge arrester will absorb a maximum amount of energy (hundreds of Joules) whenever the supplied voltage exceeds a nominal value. Often this surge comes from a coupled lightning strike but can also come from a nearby large motor back EMF when stopped, transmission line load reflection or a myriad of other phenomena. An example of a coupled lightning strike would be the Electro Magnetic Pulse from the bolt affecting all closed loop wires from lightning hitting the tree outside your house. A direct lightning strike is when the massive energy (millions of Joules) from the bolt itself directly impacts your system. Designing such a DLSP system will always be a site specific design that requires professional engineering.

I like to add:

Lightening Arrestors are deployed in Building, Installations or in the Input Power to Equipment [On AC Input circuit]. Diectly connected to Ground through a heavy gauge earth conductor.

While surge arreasors are in input of the Equipment.

These are as some gentlman has mentioned to absorb surge energy.

"Some high power Inductive load's disturbances causes surges."

But these are to absorb a small energy as compared to Lightning Arrest

Lightning can destroy a building and its contents. Imagine a building with explosives stored inside. Surge normally can damage a circuit or circuits and items connected therein.

Lightning arrestors are to give a path for lightning current to flow to ground. Surge suppressors take several forms. Some have inductors and capacitors in the form of a low pass filter to keep transients out of electronic equipment. Some have a device (MOV) that will 'short out' if the voltage goes too high, causing a fuse or a circuit breaker to blow, thereby keeping surges out of the equipment. A good one may have both. In some cases they are one time protection.
