FRP Profile Testing

08/11/2011 8:49 AM

I have the need to check an FRP profile (round rod) for internal microvoids in line during production. The profiles may be as large as 5" in diameter. We currently use a post-production water bath ultrasound system. This works but is very inefficient, labor wise. Any thoughts?

No chance of a quick post production destructive sample per batch?

When you can do destructive testing, it usually gives the most information, you can take a slice, and examine it thoroughly for defects.

Are you in control and capable? Can you go to an audit? Otherwise, sectioning or ultrasonic are the only options I can think of.

I should have mentioned that due to the nature of the production proocess and the requirements of our customer 100% product testing is required.

I think Archimedes solved this problem some time back. Since it is round, the mass calculation should be trivial.

I'd be surprised in FRP if their diameter is consistant enough to measure it by mass - especially if you're inspecting for delaminations and not just porosity.

for internal microvoids

If it is internal microvoids and delaminations, then ultrasound is the only option I know of. Backscatter X-ray might be possible, but I don't know about how small a void it would pick up.

Composites are notoriously hard to test.
