Solar Energy

08/26/2011 5:28 PM

Can I make up my own solar panels using an inverter and a lead acid battery back up? I have a south facing wall that goes to an apex. I would like to use on this wall to start with. Is it possible to make triangular panels?

Depends what you mean by "make up".

You can fabricate panels from components that you buy. You can even make the enclosures out of metals and plastics.

But you can't make up the PV panels themselves unless you have the ability to process, "Materials presently used for photovoltaics include monocrystalline silicon, polycrystalline silicon, amorphous silicon, cadmium telluride, and copper indium gallium selenide/sulfide.[1]" (From Wkik)

I was looking at voltaic solar cells on ebay 3x6 and 3.6A 1.8W. polycrystalline.

Are these the same cells used in commercially available panels?

They do make triangular panels.

I don't know anything about the cells on-line, and there are hundreds, or billions, of "commercially available" solar cells on the market. Without a part number, who could possibly answer the question.

Depends on a lot of factors. Do you have any experience with electrical equipment? What do you want to power with the panels? What size of "triangular" panel do you want?

There is a great amount of information available on home-built solar power systems. Have you done any research yet?

I have some experience of electrical equipment. This site is part of my research.

A friend of mine had 14 panels fitted to his roof and an invertor intalled I think it produces 2.6kw max. It cost him £10000. but obviously there is no facility to power the invertor in darkness, that is why I am thinking of incorporating a battery bank for the invertor (i know itll need to be a big un!). depending on costs and work involved I want to make sure my efforts are going to be cost effective.

this cr4 forum is part of my research, i like to speak with them that know.

Thanks for that. That is something worth looking at. Probably more aesthetic too!
