Creating Network to Download FSX on to Computer with Broken CD

08/29/2011 7:56 AM

Here is an interesting question. I have flight simulatorx. The cd player quit working about 2 months after I bought the computer, its an Acer dual core, other than that the processor works great. I could have it replaced for free but do not want to send the computer in to be serviced.

Now the problem, is there anyway to download fsx onto my computer using another computer, Its a legal copy with product key, ect. I have tried creating a homegroup network, and the computers see each other via ethernet cable, when I click on the icon or try to map the network drive of the other pc in the control panel under network of my computer, it asks for password and username, assuming this password and username of other computer, which the compaq being three years or so old, noone is real sure what the username or password is anymore, plus one runs vista and the other 7, the homegroup info tells me each one need to run same OS. Any ideas on how I could make this work, if not this way another, besides buying an external cd rom drive.

thanks

You should be able to create a new administrator account. Open up control panel, user accounts, manage accounts, create new account. Select administrator as the type of account. You'll be able to either leave this account with no password, or select a password and of course the account name of your choice.

You are correct in assuming that windows is asking for the user name and password on your vista machine. If your machine comes up and does not require a password before starting windows the administrator account has never been password protected.

You could try signing on without a password. If you don't know the account name, you would be able to locate it by opening up user accounts. You might wanna try this before creating a new administrator account.

Forgive me if I'm getting too fundamental, however you need to make sure that the drive you're trying to map is shared, and the permissions are correct.

Just in case you haven't done this click my computer, right clicked the drive, select properties, select sharing, click advanced sharing. Select share this folder and then select permissions.

I assume you've already tried loading this from a flash drive, or if you haven't you might want to try.

PS: make sure you restart your machine after creating the new aadministrator account or changing the share settings. Good luck.

thanks,

I'll try a few of the these ideas you have. I was kind of concerned that once moved the files to my computer, I should be able to use the install or setup file and that should cue the other files, as long as they are present on the drive to be downloaded in arranged in a cohesive order usable order. I would think.

You could copy the CD to a memory stick on another computer then copy from the memory stick and instal.

You can make a ISO copy of the CD and use a virtual CD program to mount the ISO file as a virtual CD drive.

A new DVD-ROM drive is around $20. You can swap it in 15 min.

Your other problem may be the software you want to reload. Some are configured such that they go looking for a fixed location to load from - say the cd, D: drive

If it gets all to hard why don't you borrow the CD unit from your other computer-
