How to Design TEMA G SHELL Heat Exchanger?

08/29/2011 11:40 AM

TEMA(Tubular Exchanger Manufacturer's Association) G shell is used for Condenser design. I want to design a power plant condenser but don't know much about TEMA G shell. Can any body explain me more about TEMA G shell Heat exchangers. and give some idea about baffle positions and Bafflw cut in the Condenser.

It sounds like you may not have the background to to do this design. Heat Exchangers and Pressure vessels are designed by strict codes. There is a reason licenced Engineers usually do this, it is because you can kill someone if you aren't sure about what you are doing. You will need to buy all the proper Codes, and comply to them to complete a job like this. DO NOT rely on information given to you over an open internet forum to complete designs like this. Please seek a licenced Engineer to consult you with a job like this, you will need a PE stamp or someone with one to certify the Heat Exchanger.

I am an Engineer, but would still seek a specialist in this field to help me with the project.

Do it right, get a professional to help you, and good luck!

Just what experience do you have? What qualifies you to do this? RVZ717 may be right. You might not be up to the task. Tell us why we should help you.

How can this thing ever get certified if no one is qualified to design it. Or, will you give CR4 as a reference on your certification application?

Back to you.

Dear All

I am presently pursuing MTech 2nd year (in Thermal Engineering) and i have to do the project work regarding Power plant condenser, which requires knowledge of certain design steps of TEMA G OR H shell Heat exchanger on which condenser is generally based. I have gone through different books and several journals but found that most of them are describing Bell-Delaware method for TEMA E shell heat exchangers. No reference is available for solving pressure drop or heat transfer problems in the actual condenser. This is where i required help from intellectual people across world for which I came on this site.

I would again say, if anybody comes across pressure drop and heat transfer analysis of TEMA -G or H Shell Exchengers, please inform me.

Thank u

Do yourself a favor, and pay particular attention to everything that Abdel Halim Galala tells you. His help will be invaluable to you.

Telling us you are a student, first, may have spared us all some grief.

dear sir

I am not finding any way to say your given link is useful..!!

I have tried many times but dont find any book or reference regarding design of Heat exchanger, the link of which u posted. Kindly show me the way and steps to use your link after page opens.

1st All links derived here under this CR4 Thread are very useful for whom interesting and have some experience in design and fabrication of TEMA heat exchangers.

2nd All links posted here are just a guide for design, and you have to learn the basics of design because you seems don't having sufficient experience.

3rd The following links -just a guide for you- are actual Design Drawings (2 Plots, size A0) and Mechanical Design Calculations as per ASME & TEMA, for AES type (136 Pages) for exact shell-and-tube heat exchanger already designed, fabricated and stamped with certificate of authorization U-stamp as per ASME VIII-1, I hope it will be useful for yours.

Monsoon...

Is this the first condenser you have ever specified/designed ?

Are you the purchaser for this steam surface condenser or are you his agent/engineer ?

What is the shellside massflow of the condenser ? What is the rated MWe of the machine ?

Fundamentally, I agree with the comments made above. It is not a good idea to assign an inexperienced designer/engineer to design such an important and expensive component. .... You must be working for an MBA.....

Since all of the quality US developed codes and standards are available on the internet (stolen...not purchased), I suggest that you begin your search with articles from "Power" magazine and visit the website, read all of the technical papers from that fine American Company...... Graham Manufacturing

www.graham-mfg.com

TEMA will be little or no help to you...

What, exactly are you trying to do ???

All the previous comments are spot-on.....you do not have sufficient experience to do the actual design of this component. What you can do is educate yourself enough to write decent user and functional requirement specifications for it and talk to heat exchanger manufacturers that can then help. They are the experts who can do the actual design work.

Pressure vessel and heat exchange equipment design is not a job for amateurs, so at least call the professionals who can help you do the job you've been assigned.
