Energies Of Lifting And Falling

09/11/2011 1:29 PM

Is the amount of energy released by a falling object the same as the amount of energy spent in lifting it up to the same height?

Accurately, the calculated amount of energy equals the calculated amount of potential energy, rather than actual energy to lift to the height. The difference is the losses of reality.

"the losses of reality" are most of the losses that we see on this sorry forum....

Yes - given friction free 100% efficiency in a vacuum. Otherwise, No.

What about the kinetic energy of a hammer ? It is easier driving nails with hammer than pressing them with it. We are not gaining more energy utilizing gravity force?

Yeah sorry, not really once the value of gravity is surpassed by the force of the swing.

Now if you move to a really BIG hammer, gravity counts more because you have limited ability to swing it.
