A trimmer is usually operated by turning with a small screwdriver, and is often located inside equipment, rather than accessible on a control panel and operated with a knob. Trimmers are used for setting infrequently-changed variables, typically during initial equipment set-up or during calibration.

Electrically, there is no difference (except that trimmers are usually low power devices).
