Non-lethal weapon failures in the UK

Short and funny article on non-lethal weapons designed in the UK that never made it past the testing phase. Says Charles Shoebridge, a security analyst and former counterterrorism intelligence officer with London's Metropolitan Police, "Science is a vital tool in tackling crime and terrorism...but with science comes the need for practical tests."

Less Lethal

08/16/2005 10:34 AM

The problem with the whole non-lethal weapons debate is that they are LESS lethal, not non-lethal. Most will not cause fatalities, but like the toffee gun in the article they can cause permanent harm. Like Tazering someone with a heart problem.
My big problem with these weapons is that they are much more likely to be used in practice rather than as a deterrent. This increases the odds that someone who doesn't really deserve it will be killed.

Castro

I'm glad to learn that our C.I.A. isn't the only government agency that has come up with some wild ideas. Some of the plots to kill Fidel Castro sure pushed the edge of the envelope.
