Current Transformer

In LV system we use the power factor (capacitor) panel for power factor improvement which improve the power factor in steps but in power factor we use one current transformer also which has the same rating of incomer switch. So why current transformer is required in power factor?

Power factor is the cosine of the angle between current and voltage (or KVA/KW). If you need to measure the power factor, you must have the phasor value of both current and voltage. In the Power Factor Improvement (PFI) panel, there is a power factor controller which requires power factor as input and hence both voltage and current are required as input to the controller for calculating power factor as input value. The CT is used for providing the current input to the controller. For HV system, the PT is also required for the same reason.
