Material for Wear Plate in Saddle Installation

Should material of wear plate be same as of shell? or can be different? if not, why so?

It is not should for the material of saddle to be the same material of shell. In most cases the material of saddle selected as ordinary carbon steel material like SA - 283 GR. C ( equal to S235JR equal to ST.36 or ST.37) or SA-285 GR. C ; because of the saddles does not imposed to corrosion effect like internal surface of shell especially in applications of petroleum service so if we use the material of the shell to the saddle like SA- 515, 516, 517, 537, ……, 612, 622 ……… etc. it is mean high initial cost for this application else if there more than enough of shell material it could be used for the saddles and in this case the thickness of saddles webs and saddles ribs will be less than thicknesses for the vessel and the same conditions in case of using the ordinary carbon steel material like we mentioned above. During you design the saddles - by using zick method - you must look out to the values of maximum allowable stresses of the saddle materials - from ASME sec II part D -
