Starter Generator for 1916 Cadillac

10/04/2011 8:04 AM

I need the wiring diagram for a Delco starter-generator, model 53,

serial number 98 110884. It was patented in Feb. 1916. It goes on a 1916 Cadillac.

My friend is rebuilding one and there's a couple of lugs on the field wiring without anything connected to them. We need to know what goes there and where it goes. If anyone knows where we can get this information, please advise. Your help will be appreciated.

Have some fun today,

PAPADOC

If you check other wiring diagrams in that source document for the Model 53 wiring diagram, you'll see that some of the battery symbols are marked plus at the appropriate end.

You might want to read through this document that describes the operation of the Delco starter generators of that era:

Thanks for the manual. We would like to know what goes to the terminals that are marked 1 to 4.

From the info posted by Iris.
Number 2 appears to be a mechanical switch to engage disengage the starter motor /generator ...

It would presently appear to be in starter mode.

Number 1 should go to a generator terminal and the combination switch.

3 and 4 seem to be the shunt field and one should go to the 3rd brush on the generator end and the other the combination switch.

Hmmm... on closer inspection it seems I've made a mistake.

From the info posted by Iris.
Number 2 appears to be a mechanical switch to engage disengage the starter motor /generator ... this should also be connected to a generator terminal.

It would presently appear to be in starter mode.

Number 1 should go to a generator terminal and the combination switch.

3 and 4 seem to be the shunt field and one should go to the 3rd brush on the generator end and the other the combination switch.

My best guess as to the probable connections derived from the info posted by Iris.

Good work Woodygb, GA.

I agree that #1 runs to the combination switch terminal 6, #3 to combo switch 8, #4 to the 3rd brush holder connection point. I'd probably check between 3 and 4 with an ohmmeter to confirm that each is, in fact, an end of the shunt field coil, but it's a high liklihood.

Yes, the generator disconnect terminal requires a connection to the 'permanent' generator brushes, connection GW (for generator wire) below.

What you show as a purple wire (Generator brush wire) might already be there.

I suspect that the "from Generator Brush" wire in the illustration below

probably runs through or under the field coil and connects on the other side where the generator switch is. The generator switch terminal point needs to be checked for continuity with the permanent generator brushes to see if the wire is there or not.

Cadillac will debut its brand new sedan, the XTS, at the Los Angeles Auto Show soon, and some photos were leaked of the production model. The vehicle will be replacing the STS and DTS sedans as the brand new full-size luxury automobile in the Cadillac lineup. I have read an article entitled, Cadillac XTS to debut at Los Angeles Auto Show. This is another great innovation.
