Using FET as Low Battery Cutoff

10/10/2011 6:30 AM

Hi,

I need help in designing a circuit using a FET and that cuts off the load when the battery voltage reaches 9 v and turns on the load when it is 12.5 v. I am using sealed lead acid battery of 12v and 1.4 ah and the load is 21 10mm leds.

LA battery , better to cutoff load at 10.5V instead of 9V. and terminate charge at about 14.2 volt. At 12.5 V it will be undercharge. Your question has few gaps also.

Thanks for voltage levels basically the problem is that many low battery cutoff circuits that i have come across cut the load but they drain the battery themselves i want to design a circuit which cuts the load and does not consume power after that.

As long as you need to check the battery's terminasl voltage to switch Off and ON the load, you will be consuming power from that battery!!! Therefore, there is no way you can execute such a circuit without some power consumption after the cutting OFF! YOU can only reduce the amount of current by using FETs instead of normal transistors. There are many designs to explore OR to IMPROVE on if you can, using different FETs etc.

cycling at lower voltage , will severely reduce cycle life of LA battery.
