Layered Blind Flange

the computation calls for a 4" thick blind flange to be used for hydrotest, since no 4" plate is available at our shop, can we use 2 pcs 2" thick plate instaed??? pls advise.

No. Resistance of a circular plate is proportional to its thickness ^2. If you have 2 plates half the computed thickness you obtain (1/2)^2*2= 1/2 of the expected or required carrying capability. So that if you want to have same value you need 4 plates since 4x(1/2)^2 =1.

It is not recommended to fabricate the flat end plate like blind flange by layered construction because the induce stress which act on flat ends is very high compared with induce stress which act on dish heads ends because the profile of dish head absorb some of acting stress which not occurs in flat ends.

If you want to evaluate the equivalence thickness of plate in case of blind flange not available use ASME sec. VIII -1 UG. 34.
