Slide carburettors

04/25/2007 4:30 AM

Does anyone have experience of using carb dividers on motorcycle slide carburettors? Several companies offer different types but effectively it is a horizontal plate added before or after the slide (or both). The claim is that it divides the venturi so that at part throttle openings (< 1/2 open) the airflow below the plate is cleaner giving better performance. Above the plate the slide all but blocks the flow.

If anyone has used them or has comments on the theory I'd be interested to know. Thanks.

I have not used a divider but for dirt bike application a taper bore works well. Also a power jet kit gave excellent results for my open class two stroke.

Black art?

Two aids to carb setting are: SUDCO's MIKUNI catalog (really helpful), & the appropriate version of A. Graham Bell's "Tuning" books; there's one for 2-stroke-cycle, & one for 4. Both are a good starting point.

I'm guessing the divider helps most when the carb is sized too large; a very common problem when trying to "improve" on the results from an R&D department with a $1,000,000+ budget.

Thanks for the info, I'll try to track them down. Couldn't agree more on the R&D comment. That said, there is a whole raft of companies (that presumably stay in business) selling performance goodies. I just wondered if anyone had experience of using these dividers in particular.

"better performance" could only be efficiency at cruise not really peak power. It may also improve the throttle response (guessing). It's gotta be an attempt to gain laminar flow at partial throttle settings, but to what end i dunno.
