Harmonic Filter in A.C. Circuit

11/15/2011 12:46 AM

We have installed power factor correction capacitor bank, now to reduce harmonics current, how to decide sizing of inductor?

It is very DANGEROUS to simply add an inductor in series with your existing capacitor to 'convert' it into a harmonic filter. The moment you add an inductor in series, the capacitor will experience an increase in voltage and if not properly sized for the increased voltage, the capacitor would fail. Moreover, the kVAR rating also has to be chosen very carefully so that the combination offers the required capacitive kVAR for PF correction at fundamental frequency.

Design of Harmonic Filters is a science and you cannot learn it by such "do it yourself" techniques. Please attend to a formal training programme on the subject.

The proper procedure is to purchase an inductor/capacitor unit that is designed to remove the offending harmonic and improve your power factor at the same time. You don't install the capacitor first and then try to find the inductor to fit. You have a problem. EE65 has given you warning.
