Built-in Trench Size for Laying HT Cable

12/01/2011 2:28 AM

Hi,

Let me know, what is the minimum depth (size) of a built in trench with cover slab for laying 11kV (HT) cable? Whether any specified depth for built in trench is specified in any Indian standards like IS 1255 or? Is it possible to lay both HT and LT cable in a same built in trench? If possible, how and what is the minimum clearance between HT and LT Cable? The location is Kerala in India.

If somebody knows about this, kindly respond to me.

It is very clearly given in IS 1255. HT and LT Cables can be laid in the same trench, albeit in different vertical trays. The minimum clearance between the trays shall be 300mm.

And, as far as I know, there is no stipulation for the minimum depth of a built in trench. It all depends on how many trays are going to be installed and what is the clearance between them whether a person would walk in the trench at a later date for laying and/or removal of cable, if so, what is the minimum heda room required, etc.

But, having siad so, from your recent other postings I understand that you have a problem in convincing the Kerala State Authorities. Then, may be, the above may not help. Because, the Kerala Authorities are adamant (from my little experience with them) and thye may not accept any Standard, except thier own.

Best of luck to you!

In a earth-filled trench what should be the vertical clearance between the HT(at bottom) and LT(above) cables if laid/buried in the same trench?.

Like ee65 said.

Have you already built the cable-way and the "authorities" have shot a rocket up you or are you in the planning phase?

Hi, I don't see much of a problem if,,, both cables have the same insulation resistance ratting, but it is not a practice that I would encourage

Best Regards

Joe
