Busduct vs. Single Core Cables

12/03/2011 8:23 AM

Dear All,

We have in one of our project 2 3phase transformer 2MVA-13.8KV/240V and the secondary is 10 sets of 250mm2 single core cables. Is it proper to parallel more cables or to use busduct to connect to main secondary breaker?

What are the implications and disadvantages of paralleling more cables?

It sounds like the project is under way or competed, why are you asking the question at this point? It's to late to do anything now no matter what.

What is the ampacity of 10 250mm including all derating factors?

Further check shows the 250 mm is about equal to 500 kcm. NEC rating for 500 is 380 amps without applying any derating factors. Full load amps for the transformer is 4816 at 240 volts. 10 500 kcm is not adequate for the FLA. Is 250 mm?

Confirm the cable size considering the SC capacity and do a cost comparison of cable vs duct. Cable will be more flexible and easy to lay in paths incorporating bends. Bus duct need factory made elbows. You should study the implications and take a decision.

Sir,

1 xformer 2MVA is having 10sets of 250mm2 single core cables per phase the distance of xformer to the main secondary breaker is 3M we r evaluating if we can replace this with busduct of 6000 Amps. The project is still on the construction stage and finalizing for the purchase of materials. Is this still possible?

Hi,

Connecting parallel run is depends upon the facility available in the transformer end and LV Switchgear end to connect more cables. You may need seperate adopter box to connect all these cables. (Again make sure the ampacity of the cable)

Since, the cable is only for short distance (3 meter) no need to worry about short circuit withstanding. LV Switchgear main breaker (incomer) will clear the fault.

If the LV Switcgear is MLO (Main lugs only - No Incomer breaker) single run of your cable need to withstand the secondary fault current and bus duct shall be the good option.

Regards,

Mari

Dear Wareagle

The ampacity is 3750amps for 10sets of 250mm2 will be install on the propose cable tray we r planning to replace it with busduct. My question is it okay to parallel such kind of many cables?
