Is Global Warming Man-Made?

04/29/2007 12:40 PM

I was reading some posts about global warming and the information that is coming at us from every direction. As with many events in the media eye, I'm just not sure how to take it all...I posted this once to an old thread, but thought I would start a new one as the letter below really amazes me and thought you might enjoy it too.

Dose anyone really know what is going on? Wether global warming is caused by man or not I will most likely never know...how could I?

(hummmm???...Scratching my head some more...)

What I do know is that there are so many environmental crimes and disasters...that are still going on as I write this that I would be willing to go with the global warming theory if it will help clean up the big mess that mankind has made of the planet earth. Either way common sense tells me that burning oil...and a lot if it might not have been the best idea we could come up with. Perhaps it is a combo deal...man and nature working together in the wrong direction...

Love your mother Earth and you can have your planet back. JT

This is a letter from 1854...I cannot verify the contents of this message but it sure hits home.

How Can You Buy or Sell The Earth?

The following beautiful and prophetic statement in behalf of the environment has been attributed to Chief Sealth (Seattle) and has caused him to become the folkloric hero of the environmental movement, speaking both the mind and the conscience of all concerned about the earth. It was said to have been Chief Sealth's (Seattle's) reply to n in December of 1854, upon the United States Government's offer to buy two million acres of Native American Land in the Pacific Northwest.

The Great Chief in Washington sends word that he wishes to buy our land. The Great Chief also sends us words of friendship and food will. This is kind of him, since we know he has little need of our friendship in return. But we will consider your offer.

How can you buy or sell the sky, the warmth of the land? The idea is strange to us. If we do not own the freshness of the air and the sparkle of the water, how can you buy them?

Every part of this earth is sacred to my people. Every shining pine needle, every sandy shore, every mist in the dark woods, every clearing, and every humming insect is holy in the memory and experience of my people. The sap which courses through the trees carries the memories of the red man. So, when the Great Chief in Washington sends word that he wishes to buy our land, he asks much of us….

This we know: All things are connected. Whatever befalls the earth befalls the sons of the earth. Man did not weave the web of life; he is merely a strand in it. Whatever he does to the web, he does to himself. But we will consider your offer to go to the reservation you have for my people. We will live apart, and in peace.

One thing we know, which the white man may one day discover __ our God is the same God. You may think now that you own Him as you wish to own our land: but you cannot.

He is the God of man; and his compassion is equal for the red man and the white. This earth is precious to Him and to harm the earth is to heap contempt on its Creator. The whites too shall pass; perhaps sooner than all other tribes. Continue to contaminate your bed, and you will one night suffocate in your own waste.

But in your perishing you will shine brightly, fired by the strength of the God who brought you to this land and for some special purpose gave you dominion over this land and over the red man. That destiny is a mystery to us, for we do not understand when the buffalo are all slaughtered, the wild horses are tamed, and the view of the ripe hills blotted by talking wires. Where is the thicket? Gone. Where is the eagle? Gone. And what is it to say goodbye to the swift pony and the hunt? The end of living and the beginning of survival. So we will consider your offer to buy the land. If we agree, it will be to secure the reservation you have promised. There, perhaps, we may live out our brief days as we wish. When the last red man has vanished from the earth, and his memory is only the shadow of a cloud moving across the prairie, these shores and forests will still hold the spirits of my people. For they love this earth as a newborne loves its mother's heartbeat. So, if we sell our land, love it as we've loved it. Care for it as we've cared for it. Hold in your mind the memory of the land as it is when you take it. And preserve it for your children, and love it…. As God loves us all. One thing we know. Our God is the same God. This earth is precious to Him. Even the white man cannot be exempt from the common destiny. We may be brothers after all.

We shall see….

Re: Did men make man made global warming?

Ok let us think this through. Up until about 1982 global warming did not really exist. Now a political leader was in a major bind and needed some leverage over a militant union and also wanted to use some excuse to make OPEC look rather over blown as a world organisation.

When along came a rather obscure but very timely piece of data, a research paper hinted at trouble to come if fossil fuels kept on being consumed at an ever increasing rate. It was postulated that CO2 might be a cause of (Global Warming) then unknown. Now this leader said ok I will go around to various people and hint at dark forces that could derail the planet if these nasty people continue to do as they please. The genie fled the bottle. Now after some money changed hands and things were said and done the great myth was given birth to.

In that suddenly money can be made from the new industries grown out of the myth we have a run away situation not global warming but the thing that is now the monster we all know of the great propaganda machine sponsored by the (Greens) who were once the lefties of past times they once marched to ban the bomb, then for any thing that gave them publicity. Now all those who need to support anything they can so as to feed their guilt complexes grab hold and push and shove us all around until we don't know what is good and true only that we must be seen to do some thing anything.

Industrial pollution is bad! Clean air is good. I agree. But the way we are going on today is just blind panic. Ignore science just press the alarm button. Every time a power station is shown when giving reference to CO2 they show the cooling towers there is no CO2 here just water vapour. The CO2 levels as of now art 50 to 60 times too low to cause any green house effect. OK. Water vapour from aircraft has far more effect. The cows in America north and South are a far greater danger due to the methane out put. Pigs represent a greater danger. The growth in human population is our greatest problem. The constant need to fight is a major problem. Our lack of strategic thinking, the political stupidity shown to us by those who we elect is a major problem. CO2 is way down the list of real things to worry about. 3.5 million clinically obese people is a worry. 4.6 million alcoholics is a worry. CO2 Blah so what. The Sun is out putting more heat what can we do send out the fire department? At this time there is nothing we can do until all concerned sing from the same page. Very few of us will live long enough to see if it all goes down the pan. I decided long ago not to add to the Earths troubles by reproducing, so quite frankly I really don't give a damn.

Go on pick the bones out of that.

Watching the video as I write...so pardon any brain farts.

In a nutshell...I agree with the documentary. I am a non-CO2-panicking environmentalist who simply believes in balance.

If politicians want to make a difference simple rules could be put in place limiting how much "green space" needs to be matched with the "industrial space". For example, if a company builds a factory, they need to maintain a certain amount of new growth trees/forests in the area. Or for every car built, a tree is planted. Just a thought.

In terms of limiting developing countries...why don't we plant bamboo everywhere? It grows very fast, capturing the carbon from CO2 and releases the O2...once dried bamboo is very light and strong. Is there no way to make this a more practical building material? Right now you can use it instead of hardwood floors...why not wall studs or other non-structural things? Why not use it in composite joists and roof trusses? If anyone has any info in this area, I'm very interested.

Bamboo is commonly used in the far east for hundreds of uses. The only problem is some types flower and die off so chosing the right type is the thing also it can be very invasive so care must be exercised as to where it can be grown.

I would be quite interested to know if there's anyone out there that makes bamboo into things like floor joists, trusses or wall studs. It would be interesting to do a case study on the initial cost of a house and then it's resistance to humidity change etc that normally cause a typical house to deteriorate.

This case study then multiplied to a larger scale and compared with the renewability of a [enclosed] bamboo forest vs the renewability of hard and softwood forests.
