California Interchange Colllapses in Fire

04/29/2007 2:42 PM

The fuel tanker fire collapsed 250 feet of Interstate 80 freeway near the Bay Bridge in Oakland, California. That fly-over bridge is bare steel construction with a concrete slab roadway. The main steel girders are about 7-8 tall, top to bottom - massive. The 8000 gallons of gasoline weakened them to collapse in an hour or less. It's instructive that this is just about the time frame of the WTC towers collapse on 9/11.

'It's instructive that this is just about the time frame of the WTC towers collapse on 9/11.'

I await the conspiracy theories with bated breath!

I have seen the conspiracy theories flying already - "How come he didn't call 911?", "How come he left the scene and got a taxi?", "How come he took the taxi to a Shell gas station that was closed?", and "Why were the names of the truck driver and the taxi driver witheld from the press reports?" have been making the rounds. The latest conspiracy theory is that it was a ploy to drastically increase usage of the local mass-transit system by commuters who now can't otherwise get there by driving.

What will they think of next?

Excellent! Sometimes I wish people would subscribe a bit more to the saying, 'sh*t happens'. There doesn't have to be anything sinister behind what every bad occurrence. Unless Moulder been seen there?

Just because Americans are paranoid doesn't mean people aren't out to get them.

It's true that even paranoids have enemy's, it's also true that paranoids make enemy's faster than anyone else, as mistrust begets mistrust.

I just saw Scully running down the road. Moulder shouting after her (some thing about a new type of hyperformance fuel).

About 20 years ago we had a new 4 lane overpass across the 401 highway in Ontario, Canada, destroyed by fire. I believe it was called the James Snow Parkway overpass. Reinforced concrete construction. A large loaded fuel truck hit the center support columns mid span and burnt. This was a major highway and essentially closed the largest highway in the country. Terrorism wasn't even considered. Just an "aw shit".

What I was impressed with was the fast response of the Dept. of Highways. Within 24 hrs they had a paved bypass around the bridge largely utilizing the existing on / off ramps. Within a week the bridge had been demolished by explosive experts and the rubble removed. The concentration of very heavy earth moving machines, paving equipment, and demolition experts was amazing to see. Traffic on the 401 was back to normal within weeks.

It was about 2 years before the overpass was re-constructed.

Now if the local municipal gov could move that fast I would be delighted. About 10km of highway improvement widening to 4 lanes in relatively flat land has taken about 5 years. Small machines, workers leaning on shovels, I can't see anything happening on a daily basis, every six months or so they pave another couple hundred feet ( mixed units I know, but this is Canada, eh?). It is painful to watch.
