Where Can I Find a REAL Free Registry Cleaner for My PC?

04/29/2007 6:51 PM

after writing in "100% CPU and really slow" I tried a few things on my pc, I downloaded and installed a program that cleared up some ram. It improved it a little but I think the main thing is the registry. I have installed and deleted a lot of programs and from what I understand that is the cause of a slow pc, or at least one cause. There are no conflicts of any type that I can find, its just slow, I am running xp.

I followed some of the advice here on the last blog and found a "free" registry cleaner. I installed the program, ran it, and ultimately wasted over an hour of my time when the tool said, "there are over 2000 problems found on your computer!" "We will fix 20 of the problems, if you want the rest fixed buy the software!"

Does anyone know where I can find a tool that will do this for FREE, actually FIX IT for free?

Does anyone have a program they can email to me?

mahobgood@bwxt.com

Thanks guys!

Toni Arts has a pretty good regristry cleaner and they dond try to sell you a bunch of junk you don't need. Here is a link. You'll want Easy cleaner 2.0. Select the download with the installation file.

I don't have what you are looking for, but I tried a program with similar output, and I don't believe a word of what it said. I also don't believe it's the registry; not if you un-installed a lot of programs. I would first clean out temp files and temporary internet files, then do a disk de-frag. Look for temp files directly under C: and windows.

Ok, I'll try that. I have defragmented it twice so that can't get any better but if doing the basic xp maintenance doesn't get rid of all the temp files then I will search for them manually and get them. Thanks for the advice! If anyone else still has suggestions feel free to write in. Even if it doesn't help me I can still learn from it.

What you can use is CCleaner. Its is free & does a good job.

Another thing you can use is free pagedefrag utility. It will defrag all your system files & pagefile.

The next thing you can do is hit ctrl+alt+del & see the performance by cpu usage & find out what is taking up all your cpu resources. Determine if you really need that service or is it simply junk - like built in indexing service. You could use locate32 & copernic desktop search, both are free, for the purpose.

Use EZMem from e-systems.ro to manage your memory. Works like a chem.

Registry cleanup will only clean out junk or invalid entries which will certainly reduce your boot time but not much else.

As a last resort get a copy of one of the tweaked versions of XP that will run much faster & cleaner.

I have seen a version of Windows Server 2003 tweaked for desktop use run on AMD - K6 500 mhz, 128 mb ram. The memory usage with Excel & Word (Office XP-SP2) running was around 110 mb. Otherwise it hovered around 75 to 80 mb. The system was surprising very responsive.

Another thing to try is clearing out the prefetch cache which tends to accumulate junk over time.

The de-frag is no help if your PC is still full of junk. Try HDcleaner or CrapCleaner to reduce the junk, you should be able to download them for free. You could also try TracksEraser which will also remove all of the hidden history files but it's no good if you rely on the history to re-visit recent sites. The best tool I have found is System Mechanic which will remove junk & spyware, recover RAM, de-frag drives & memory & generally keep the PC speed at an optimum but you have to pay for this one.

I went through the same thing, never found anything that worked quite right for free. Now I use Registry Mechanic and pay the annual fee. I'm satisfied. ( I also use their sister product Spyware Doctor).

hopped through he same hoops, eventually bought ErrorKiller and AdwareAlert still not convinced they were much of help, although claiming of removal hundreds of problems.
What really improved the performance was doubling the RAM.

Agree with you 100 %. It's probably the best money you can spend (after security)

Crap Cleaner is one of the best!!! I've been using it for long now and it is quite suprising. it's a freeware with no spyware so you can download update without any problem. You can get it at www.filehippo.com. Little advice, to make it work better activate all cleaning options. ( this is a registry cleaner )

To fix spyware known as '' problems '' you can use spybot wich you can get on the same site as crap cleaner. It's free and usualy quite good. When you're using spybot he tries to delete the spywares he founds during the scan. If it's not able it ask you to start a scan next time your computer will start. Accept it's request and restart your computer.

The reason why it's doing this it's because some of the spyware are set to start with windows and use by. So when you try to delete it windows blocks you.

enjoy your new fast computer.

if you're still having problem you should think about getting windows deffender. ( it's free and working well. if you're windows is considered as a genuine one.

avg antivirus is another option you should think about.

If you use SpyBot, the 'immunise' feature is good, it prevents future attacks.

Although MS own making, also attempts to redeem, as freeware:

Here, here, here, and here. Used for about five years by now. Why not judge for yourself?

Or is this not a real registry-cleaner?

I don't know, I mean, after all, It's MS-made, to fix MS own...

Re: Where Can I Find a REAL Free Registry Cleaner for My PC?

By "real" I was suggesting how the majority of the registry cleaning software is advertised as being free, but in the fine print you find out that it was only a free scan. When the software finishes scanning your pc it tells you that it will fix a few of the problems after claiming to fix all of your registry. They should not advertise it as freeware if it is not free. it should be under the free trials category so that you don't have to sift through it.

By misinforming people that your product is free you waste their time and no!, even if I were to buy a product for this I would not buy that one. They think that if they get you to start their software and surprise you that it is not free right as your waiting for it to fix your pc, that you will whip out your credit card and buy it after spending the time waiting for the scan to be done.

This is a bullshit marketing scheme that is dishonest and I will ultimately go to their competitors site and buy the same type of software because their competitor advertises up front that it costs this amount or that it is only a free trial.

So the developers that say "ours is free, wait a minute, it's not," after spending hours of your time trying to get something done, only to find that you are the victim of bad marketing skills, these companies don't deserve my money or yours. That is what I meant by "Real" & FREE registry cleaner

Well said . Unfortunately , Sales people usually have no concept of ethics. There is some great freeware , but it is still largely true that 'there's no such thing as a free lunch' .

Do you have the original Windows disks? Sometimes the best medicine is a clean install. I know it's a big waste of time, but sometimes you just need a clean install. After backing everything up that you don't want to lose, you might try to re-install Windows, install the patches (big memory and system hog!), then install and update antivirus and adware programs. Also, make sure you have the right antivirus, one for a PC and not a server - I once got the wrong version on by mistake, and my computer took about 1/2 an hour just to boot and try to load the antivirus. That took hours to fix, once I finally figured out what happened.

Plan B would be to invest some time in Linux. I haven't yet, but I have read a lot from those that have - save yourself the headaches, if you can do without any special software you may have that only runs on MS.

Re: Where Can I Find a REAL Free Registry Cleaner for My PC?

Now, more to the point: The mere suggestion, or fact, that a PC should slow because it's registry system runs idle-iterations, looking for registered apps long-gone, is a shameful note to MS's part, because the registry-police should not have been there in the first place.

This is not to mention some cases, where the registry system crashes the whole OS to oblivion (famous Blue-Screen-Of-Doom), because someone wiped an app directory from "My Programs" without getting a "Police Permit" first, in the form of a formal "Control-Panel Un-Install" ritual. Do your niceties, and be grateful! you cheeky costumer!

What are we, retarded sheep? (Rhetorical, no comments, please)

For those having trouble following:

Windows Registry System, is an anti-piracy-police mechanism, having nothing to do driver-compatibility, or resource-management, as been explained to you all by MS, I'm sure, once and again! Are we clear on that? Thanks!

If you are really serious about security, stop wasting your time with disappointing security freeware. It is more important than the money you try to 'save'. Remember there is no such thing as a free lunch.

'System Mechanic v6' is excellent. Version 7 even more so. (My personal experience.)

Get on-line and read the specs and details. It is a dream.

Best wishes and happy 'putering'.

Also, McAFee 2007 has a register cleanup utilities that clean up the register nicely. It's not free, but I bought it after Thanksgiving for $5 for it's sort of free.

Re: Where Can I Find a REAL Free Registry Cleaner for My PC?

Well, I did it! Today is 5/4/07, this morning I ran the registry cleaner and got rid of everything I could that EasyCleaner would get rid of. It didn't make much difference, some things are running better but it is not a very big difference. Now that I have disposed of incorrect/invalid shortcuts, dead ends in the registry, temp files, etc. Should I go back and defragment the drive? I have at least one more thing that I will be doing tomorrow, I am going to run the spyware locating program I downloaded (spybot) to see if there is spyware from when I did have the internet. Maybe that is what's eating up my processor speed. I am also going to see if I can locate a program through task manager to see if there is one hogging the processor. It still hesistates to open the start menu which should be a simple, instant task, and again does this when I'm trying to close a window. If this doesn't work I'll just format the drive and reinstall everything.

Idle iterations of spyware in a system no longer on-web, is very, very likely, to slow the system, by nibbling in the volume of CPU useful cycles.

You need to check running process as suggested . Look on google for any you don't know and see what they are/do you need them. I'd be interested to know if you tried RegScrubberXP.
