Water Level Sensing Equipment

12/16/2011 3:28 PM

Looking for a water level sensing equipment that will control 4 X 110kw pumps using a common sump[Intake].If water level goes down one pump stops, goes down further second pump stops. The sequence goes on up to the last pump. The reverse process can also apply. Pumps comming in in sequence as the water level goes up. Any suggestions?

Many options. What signal are you looking for?

0-10V 4-20ma etc.

How accurate do you need this to be?

Some types:

Liquid level float switches, very simple, inexpensive, robust, somewhat accurate. Look at Gems for options.

Capacitive Proximity sensors will work well depending on range, and are a non-contact type option. Peppurl & Fuchs makes some nice stuff.

Ultrasonic are very common for this application, and work well. Again, I would check with Peppurl & Fuchs.

It's impossible to simply tell you what to use without knowing what your sensing range, accuracy, repeatability, temperature, etc. requirements are.

I suggest figuring out exactly what it is you really need, and figure out what the output you are after is.

Ask yourself these:

  1. What distance am I measuring from?
  2. what is the allowable variation?
  3. do I need simple switches, or real time measurement?
  4. What is my required output signal?
  5. How fast does the device need to sample?
  6. How do I plan to mount this device? (Side mount tank top mount etc)
  7. Do I have access to the component for maintenence once it's installed?
  8. Are there any environmental hazards, corrosive gasses, or physical restrictions?

That should give you a good start to help narrow down your requirements to help you select the right type of component.
Once you can answer a few of these questions get back to us and we can help you decide what will work best for your application.Good luck.

Mechanical float switches or capacitive or even optical switches.

Talk to the people SE gave you in his post. Done every day.

Look for small and short stroke tough mechanical switches. Is so common don't spend money in electronics stuff.electric devices store.-

Yes. Separate switch for each motor. Very cheap. Much easier to troubleshoot down the track (or are you available 24/7?) ;-)

The simplest is a set of pendulam type level electrodes connected to a custom made (or available with pump control manufacturers) PCB which switches on/off pumps in the required sequence. Make sure that the switching sequence(1,2,3,4/2,3,4,1/ 3,4,1,2/ 4,1,2,3 and so on) changes automatically so that all pumps will operate for nearly same number of hrs. Each pump controller(starter)should incorporate a running hour counter or lapsed time meter.

For elevated water storage tanks consider pressure switches. These are the industry standard in the water service community.
