Electromagnetic Coils to Lockup Full Collet Clamping Device

12/17/2011 11:58 PM

I am looking for a coil that will pull a plate disc to activate a spinning full collet tube clamping system at a co-axially alignment with the spinning disc centre rotation axis. The action will be similar to the clutch system in the air-conditioning pump drive of a car or truck. My design differs slightly as the clutch spinning disc does not contact the drive face and will miss the coil exposed face.

My coil or multiple coil array will have an inside diameter of 590mm and an external diameter of 790mm and would be 10mm thickness. I am hoping to get an attraction force equivalent to the magnetic base of magnetic drill base.

I would be greatfull if anyone could guide me to a manufacturer in Australia?

Have you built an engineers model? A prototype? Has the design been proven in some way? You might want to consider these things before contacting a manufacturer...

I think it was a turret lathe that had a lever handle to loosen and tighten the collet chuck. To match that force will take a really strong electromagnet.

Consider the more cumbersome lever assembly, with maybe a linear actuator to pull the lever. This will use more off the shelf items, and also allow for adjustments in collet tightness.

I have looked at mechanical operating permanent neodimiun magnets 90 degree rotation) but this adds another source of wear and tear. An electromagnetic magnetic coil has zero moving parts and the electronics and power will interface with the remaining control and laser triggering devices in the mass production factory. This magnet has to work continuously in 6 seconds on and 6 seconds off operations and the factory will produce roll products at 600 per hour per line. I had thought of using numerous base coils from the 'ATRA ACE', 'NITTO', 'KOHKI' or similar magnetic base drills as they range from 1,000kgf to >2500kgf but the cost and size are large and cumbersome for my application. This is the reason I am looking for a manufacturer who can build to my requirements of more likely have a suitable model 'Off the Shelf'.

There may be a difference in performance between the magnet in a drill base and the coil in a solenoid. Your application requires a coil, a solenoid, from what I know of collet closers. The magnet in the drill base will hold very well once the metal is in contact with it, but I don't think it will pull from the distance needed to close the collet.

Have you made a test unit?

Hi Mike, the coil in my magnetic drill base will lift a 200kg mass from more than 2" but I nearly destroyed the potting resin when the plate slammed into the drill coil base and it now has a hairline fracture on the outside of the corner of the coil. It has been checked as OK so I know my requirements should be OK. Also, I have used 'Eddy Current' winches in very large belt conveyors and the principal is similar to my needs however, 'Eddy Current' winch clutch systems are too big for my applications. The coil is actually a solenoid coil as used in starter motors, household appliances valves/switches etc. and I could use around 100 of these or as I would prefer, to have a single coil hence the reason to source a manufacturer. I need to pull the disc plate less than 1/2" maximum travel and final clearance will be <0.125".

Have you tried locating manufacturers of scrapyard magnets? These are designed to be switched on and off, though not at the rate you propose. They also work with poor metal-to-metal contact. The general design principles should be quite similar, I would think.

Why not just use one of the many air or hydraulic collet closers already widely used in the marketplace?
