NORMALISED SA 516 Gr 70

12/28/2011 9:49 PM

Dear All,

I've purchase a SA 516 Gr 70 plate material for U stamped vessel fabrication, but there is no "MT" or "N" marking on it. But certificate says it is normalised and killed.

How can i confirm that material is normalized, if I do micrographic examination what is the required grain size for normalized plate??

What is the hardness requirement for Normalised plate??

Your valuable advices are highly appreciated.

Regards

Please read "Specification for pressure vessel plates, carbon steel, for moderate and lower temperature service" ASTM SA-516/516M. Also, SA-20/A20M.

There you have the answer. WP

I did Microstructure examination on the plate and I got grain size number 9 on it, which confirms that it is in fine austenitic grain structure. But my question is that can I confirm the normalized condition based on grain structure and hardness??

Since ASME SA 20 and SA 516 is silent about hardness requirement, I could not reach a conclusion based on it.

Yes, hardness for this material is no specificate. There some clips in NACE about corrosion, but not to much. For this material (P1) we use Max. 200HB

What is plate thickness . As per you the Grainsize is 9, which is considered fine grain for this Grade. What is the chemistry and tensile range. If its Grain size is equiaxed (ferrite & pearlite) and nearly uniform across thickness, it should be considered as normalised .

Once the Certificate says it is Normalised and killed ( Al-Si Killed ? ) and if it is meeting the properties, should also be O K for taking up fabrication .
