Steam Turbine

01/01/2012 12:12 PM

Dear all gentlemen,

To Wal Guru,Kabar Tak baik,The boss is jumping now.We spent close to MYR2 Mil for this turbine.

Lubrication -no problem-pressure and temperature within limit.NO re blading.Whole 10th stage blade removed permanently. No chance to tear down complete unit. The bos will not accept that unless FOC.Yesterday my findings :fastening arrangments look intact. But I did notice slight relative movement at one portion of casing bottom but unsure old or new sign.I presumed if new, rotor bow.Yes,upwards trending after steam demand increased. To test run and put into load is like put extra stress on the turbine as starting turbine is equivalent to 20hours running?Steam turbine is of extraction condensing type.Could it be the instrumentations although E&I team verified ok?

No I don't think the instruments are bad, what I do think is that you are in over your head, and need to call for backup...I think the shaft is out of alignment or bent....Do you have any way to check this??

Hi Rosli, have you contacted the Siemens' Tech Rep? Being Siemens just recently overhauled this turbine, it would seem that the problem is with Siemens. I would think your boss would be yelling at them. I have a hard time understanding why Siemens would permanently remove the 10th stage turbine blades, or your company accepting less than a complete turbine assembly. Talk about killing the efficiency of your turbine. Do you know if Siemens dynamically balanced the turbine after overhaul?

If you could give us the make and model, we might be able to better assist you with troubleshooting.

Rosli split his inquiry over 2 threads for reasons best known to him. I think he was an AP in his original enquiry then wanted to come out or something.

Hilton, here's the link to his other thread. Also, my last comment on that thread is, I don't think the OP (Rosli) survived, I think his goose got cooked in the soup. He has not been back since the original postings

One rule:

What's vibrating needs balancing.

Seems like someone forgot this?

Thats my thoughts too. And for Siemens to remove all the blades on the tenth stage wheel, seems a little strange, let alone his company to except the turbine back in an incomplete state.

I work as an independent Turbine generator consultant. I have had to machine off a row of blades to get a unit back in service until parts can be aquired. It sounds like you have an alignment problem. I know Siemens can be a problem to deal with but they should be on the job trying to fix your unit. Make absoutly sure your operations department did not cause this problem due to not operating the unit correctly.

Problem could have been defined more clearly. Lot of un-identifiables for others like MYR2, Wal Guru, Kabar Tak baik, boss, FOC etc. I guess E&I means Electrical & Instrumentation. What about Siemens, dj95401 mentioned about? Also reasons for removing 10th row is missing.

The vibration may be a steam pressure oscillation in the turbine when there is demand for steam by another part of the plant.

A drop in pressure, resulting in throttle opening, overshoot then throttling back, ie hunting, or even a standing wave that resonates at that moment.

Is there any feed back damping that can be adjusted?

Seriously, we're all guessing here. Talk, shout, yell, scream, beg, plead, kowtow to Siemens. Unless you've burnt that bridge....
