How to make a three-phase transformer system using two single-phase transformers

01/03/2012 1:55 PM

Well we can make a three-phase transformer using THREE single-phase transformers, but is it possible to make one, using only TWO single-phase transformers ?

Just count the number of primary and secondary windings that exist in your three transformer configurations (one 3Φ, three 1Φ, two 1Φ) and I believe you will immediately get your answer. Now one certainly can make a useful configuration with just two single phase transformers that are connected to three phase power, but this will not produce a three phase transformer.

On second thought, if you're willing to dismantle your two transformers down to core laminations and magnet wire then one can make a three phase transformer from two single phase transformers. It will certainly be easier and cheaper to just buy the correct transformer but it is possible.

Yes You can. It is called an open delta configuration. Google open delta and check it out. There some limits on the load that can be run with this type of connection. Why do you want to do this?

Nothing. I was just discussing 3 phase transformers with a friend and that question came up. Searched the net but couldn't find anyting so i wrote here.

Thanks for the info, by the way.

If you ever get the opportunity to try in a practical situation please let us know the outcome.

Perry

Suppose you only have two primary phase conductors. Are you saying it won't work?
