The Stars Are Out Tonite

01/04/2012 2:30 PM

Thread rating. Easy and quick to do.

I seldom have done so, and most of the CR4 community seldom does so. At this writing 16 of the latest 100 threads in General are rated, 13 of the last 100 in Electrical Engineering, and only 6 of the latest 100 in Automotive.

Do you bother to rate the threads? Do you pay much attention to the ratings? Is it bad karma to rate a thread a one? Is it good karma to give it a five?

I have heard the single star can be the kiss of death for a thread, but that doesn't always seem to be the case. Likewise a number of five star threads only get one or two comments.

Somebody rate this thread, would ya?

I'd rate it, but I don't know how.

I'm strange though, I look at all the threads. Ratings don't mean anything to me.

I know just enough to be dangerous.

There's no place to rate it

On other threads I can find the rate button on the reply (edit) page??????

EDIT - OK got it. When I went back in to edit my posted reply, it showed up.

Here is Five Stars

EDIT again - It only showed up as one star on the "All Forum Threads" page.

Here, I'll try another five.

Edit - OK - Voting 10 stars (2 - fives) got me 2 stars on the AFT page.

Hmm, I just rated this a 2 just to see if this makes it a 3.5 or what?

There, I got it up to 3 stars. Actually it was 2.7, so they must round off.

"I voted five, two more times..."

I am reminded of the political machine that is Chicago: Vote early and vote often!

I am not sure but I'll bet you can only rate once, just like GA or OT. Likewise I can't rate my own thread.

A couple of time I have rated a thread that had received other votes. The result displayed was the average of stars voted.

[edit] It just occured to me. I have been in denial but it IS true... we can get hung up on the math on just about anything!

Re: The Stars Are Out Tonite

I just did what we tell so many people to do: Refer to the FAQ!

From the Site Glossary, a few answers:

"Please note that we do not display half or quarter stars. Instead, we round up or round down to the closet rating. For example, an item rated 3.2 stars will physically display as 3 stars, while something rated 3.7 will appear as 4 stars. You are welcome to change your vote at any time, but CR4 will only consider your most recent vote for each story (i.e., if you vote that a story is a 2 and later change your vote to a 4, your original vote of 2 is deleted)."

So while you cannot vote more than one time, you may alter you vote at any time. I didn't realize that.

Cheater? Who, me?

All I did was sneak liberate the CR4 cheat codes from SavvyExacta's desk (if you leave the drawer key in plain sight under the flowerpot it is an open invitation). These will soon be available to everyone in the third edition of the LynDoor™ Press The CR4 Guide to Shameless Self Promotion.

Our second printing (both copies) sold out in 117 days, and we anticipate an equally robust session with the third printing.

We are a little ashamed of chapter 75 of The CR4 Guide to Shameless Self Promotion. You see, it describes CR4 Rule #75; The chapter is one sentence long and contains no useful information. The shameful part? We put forth very little effort, provided no useful information, and expect to be rewarded. However, we are not too ashamed to allow it to remain in the book.

With this comment I shamelessly self promote as well a give fodder for passingtongreen.

Definition of HERETIC. 1: a dissenter from established religious dogma; especially: a baptized member of the Roman Catholic Church who disavows a revealed truth
WOW. I'm moving up the social ladder. I thought I was a redneck engineer !

Rating a thread is nuts. I don't think in those terms but if I did, I would be aware that an interesting thread can turn to mushy brown stuff in the blink of an eye when the comedians descend on it with wildly OT posts, and then reward each other with GAs for these posts.

You have completly misunderstood the thread. This thread HAS NOTHING WHATSOEVER to do with awarding OTs or GAs. It's about the little gold stars that appear when someone thinks the THREAD is good and it has nothing to do with specific answers.

Thus, the title of the thread.

Why not go back to square one and start over.

More important is number of Good scores(1,2,3,4,5 etc) obtained by each participant to be published weekly.

There's only two things I consider before openning a thread:

Number of comments, and/or how appealing is the title.

Though at first I didn't get yours right, "did you mean celebrities gonne out for dinner? or tonight will be a dye black night? or to the contrary, full of stars?" I thought, but as walked in, the context revealed me what you meant.

Regards

Thanks Yahlasit.

That's another great point: a good thread title will probably attract more views and comments than a five-star rating.

I think that the regular members know there are many ESL (English as second language) posters and freely forgive thread title irregularities. Some are entertaining in themselves... I chuckle whenever I see Retired, No Title.

I keep applying for that job but they always say I am not qualified.

Ummm 3 stars

Thereby eloquently demonstrating it is meaningless

Much as the threads "How do I fix my Cavalier" and "Watt is an Ohm?" do.

BTW, I fixed "tonight" in your title - 2 more "ESL" stars right there.
