Ford Bantam Fuel Gauge

01/13/2012 8:14 AM

Good day Friends. I drive a Ford Bantam 1.3i (Rocam engine). The fuel gauge was working perfectly well until I filled the tank full to capacity (used to just fill enough until this day, bought the vehicle second hand). Since this recent fill the gauge "collapsed", with the low fuel indicator light permanently on. The vehicle has clocked over 300km and the gauge has not woken up once ever since.

I need your advise as to where I can look in order to correct/repair this problem, please

The float has taken on fuel and will no longer "float". It now sits at the "out of fuel" location.

Repair or replace.

Good show. Care is also called for in removing the old sender, as this access is often in a very dirty location, like the floor of the trunk.

Thanks friends. I will follow your suggestions in repairing this problem. I just need to drive a few more kms to reduce the fuel in the tank...I had to take out an Isuzu KB some time ago while three quarter full and it was no child's play.

Do not use a match to look at the float.

The vehicle may have a CVR (constant voltage regulator) just for the fuel gauge. I have had these fail although not in the past 30 yrs. If you remove the sending unit check it with an OHM meter as you move the float the reading should vary accordingly. If possible check the voltage to the gauge if there is any. This is a good start.
