well, what does it do?

I know Electrolux used to make vacuum cleaners. (Without cheating) I'll Venture to say it's some type of hands free Vacuum Cleaner, or floor polisher.

I think about 2 possibilities :

- it cools or heats a metallic cup when one works near to its PC so that coffee stays hot or beer stays cool.

- it is a scale directly connected to a PC the weight displayed on the PC screen.

It's not "cool", it's "hot" and involves bread and the weather.

A device to rapidly rewinding a DVD before returning to the rental store?

A photometer that measures the light intensity reflected off a surface at different angles. And I think it's called a goniophotometer or goniometer.

There is a Laser Reflectometer which does exactly that. It measures the intensity of the reflections of a monochromatic light source at different angles and solves the "Fresnel Equation." It is used to measure the thickness of silicon oxide and silicon nitride films on semiconductor wafers. But.... this isn't one.

This object is very anonymous looking - not much in the way of clues, as to its use - except perhaps something to do with food?

Ummmm - I thort the link would be clear enough to what it is used for ... but the salient point is/was the ton/room sized thing it replaced ... but no you won't have an app in your phone for it.

The function is clearly feeding a set length off a roll of material then guillotining it off. That the guides are blades indicates the material is likely printed (avoiding smudging the ink)

Two uses are conceivable

Issue of tickets at such as theaters (pre perforation options in printing machines)

Labeling

Given the rocking foot, I would suggest the latter as it would allow label to by 'wiped onto' a semi-flat or resilient surface, or indeed, selectable wetting of an adhesive.

Given the approximate antiquity - and printed, rather than typed, infers a pre-known consistent volume of variables are involved - say subscribers addresses - say as in the Sears Roebuck catalogue days.

How am I doing?

If this is a goniophometer, then where is the light source? Where is the detector? Where is the sample placed? A goniometer implies a source of radiation on a moving arm, linked to a detector that follows it at an appropriate angle to measure the reflection intensity. This anonymous box looks more like a modem or other electronic gadget. Can you supply a link to a site that verifies that this is what you say it is?
