Top Skills of an Electrical Project Engineer

01/16/2012 9:45 AM

Sometimes my superiores, colleges, and young engineers would ask the question below. I thought I'd share the question with CR4 and see what experienced professionals would say.

Q: What are the top skills requirements of an Electrical Project Engineer?

Assuming "Project Engineer" is one who manages a complete project, (let us say erection and commissioning a small sub-station), i believe he should have in no particular order...

1. An ability to get along with everyone, especially prima donnas

2. Tenacity

3. A general, if superficial, knowledge of civil, mechanical, electrical, instrumentation and information technologies. No expertise required in any of them, the prima donnas are there for that.

In general, a go-getter who won't quit, and for whom people will go that extra mile.

Only my humble two cents...

Good Answer KV.... but I think you may have described an Industrial Engineer.

As a project engineer, one should also know about project planning, time-lines, power requirements, and when to call in reinforcements.

Most "projects" are planned without the explicit knowledge of those who must contribute. Frequently some resources have other projects that they must also work on. This causes delays due to unplanned resource shortages.

Knowing the schedule restraints of your outside resources is difficult but important. Being flexible and understanding the idea of critical path is also highly recommended.

Hourly project walk-through to ensure construction is per the plans and specs.

Recognize non-scope work needed or work not adequately called out in the plans and specs and issue change order submittals as needed.

On a daily basis, obtain competitive pricing from material vendors, place daily material orders and inspect same as material is delivered.

Assign daily work milestones for crew and sub-contractors.

End of shift walk-through to ensure milestones have been met.

Coordinate with public electric utility, telephone utility, nat gas utility (for generator fuel supply) when applicable.

A Project Engineer performs work that crosses the boundaries between engineering and project management, leading the technical workers who contribute to the building of structures or products. In some cases, the Project Engineer is the same as a Project Manager but in most cases these two professionals have joint responsibility for leading a project

Major responsibilities will include but not be limited to the following:

• Responsible for planning, scheduling, conducting and coordinating the technical and management aspects of projects.

• Accountable for the successful completion of engineering projects.

• Requires extensive regular contact with assigned project Clients.

• Assist in the preparation of engineering project proposals.

• Budget monitoring and trend tracking.

• Participating in Client/contractor meetings and resolving Client/engineering and management project issues.
