For resin molding I would use a silicon or urethane mold material. The silicon is a two-part silicon so that it will cure in a reasonable amount of time. You don't want to use the stuff in tubes at the hardware store. Silicon molds generally do not need a mold release, however, you can always add them. Urethane molds may have greater strength and tend to be a little stiffer. Expect to use a mold release or sealer agent with urethane.

I sent one of our employees down to Orlando, Florida last year for a seminar on mold making. The company was called Reynolds and they are extremely helpful with questions.

Another popular product is Smooth-On.

The whole process can get a little involved, so I would consider calling a technician at Reynolds on the phone and discussing your application and needs directly with them. They can guide you to the best solution for you and save you a lot of time trying to understand the various kinds of molds and molding supplies, not to mention money on unneeded supplies and experimentation.

The type of material you select is going to depend on what you are molding, its shape, size, whether it requires a two-part mold or one, and how many times you need to use the mold.

Thank you AH, I have used Smooth-on silicone for molds and Reynolds looks like a great source.

The project actually involves drape-forming epoxy saturated polyester fiber so many of the issues of mold making are eliminated. Thanks again.

I expect that AH knows something about drape forming, too.

But your question was misleading.

And are you really using epoxy saturated "ployester" fiber?

Your comment about the question being misleading is interesting. I have been told that some posts are placed as entertainment or lures to initiate discussion. I notice that some posts are devious to obtain useful trade information without revealing trade secrets. Is there a policy at CR4 about the ethics of openness and honesty in posting? I know there is a policy regarding politeness. Or is this just part of the debate over controls being imposed onto the internet? Government vs. Private vs. None? Answering misleading questions can be a thankless task. Comments?

(AH provides good answers. It is a shame to waste them or make them less efficient.)

Who Me?

Oh. Well I wasn't saying he was trying to extract information surreptitiously.

The process he described is used every day. It just isn't what he really wants to do.

As far as CR4 policy goes, I don't make it.

Lyn- Sorry. I wasn't intending to imply anything negative about your posts. They are very informative and well stated. Maybe I need new drugs.

No offense taken. I was searching for a way to say that the original post was not well stated, without calling the original poster an idiot. (Which I have been known to do)
