Testing a ATMEGA64A Controller

01/23/2012 9:11 AM

Hi all,

I am using ATMEGA64A controller, I have 5 pcb boards with this controller, out of five 4 are successfully programmed but I am not able to program the last board. I am using avrstudio 4 to burn the code, please reply me how to test whether the controller is working fine or gone bad. I have checked the conectivity from the programing pin to the controller pins, all are proper, please reply how to proceed.

regards

Swap the controller with one on a good board and see if the problem follows the controller or stays on the board.

I've had a similar problems with PIC micros on surface mount PCBs. The integrity of connections to 10 mil pitch IC leads and 0402 parts is very difficult to judge with the naked eye. Suggest you look at the board under magnification/microscope. You may have a cold solder joint. Sometimes retouching "suspicious" looking solder joints fixes the problem. I've also found and removed solder and/or copper whisker "shorts" to fix defective boards. On most boards I've repaired, the defects only became obvious when I examined them under a 20x binocular microscope. Good luck!
