LCDs don't require high voltage to function. If at all it is the back lighting that will require it.
In most cases - I am assuming TV & PC Monitor applications - the back lighting has been provided by fluorescent lamps. Now with availability of very high efficiency low cost white LEDs a number of manufacturers will gravitate to to these types to reduce power consumption & heat built up.
On most calculators with lcds AND back lighting work on 3 volts or less. Even your mobile (wireless, cellular) phones with colour lcd displays & back lighting work on 3 volts.
Your cordless handsets work on 3.6 volts.
