Vehicle Power/Torque Curves With a Stopwatch

02/10/2012 4:08 AM

Sometime during the 80s either Petersen's 4x4 or Four Wheeler magazine had an article accompanied by a table to be filled in. By way of this table one do some calculations against revs and get figures to plot a power and a torque curve for the vehicle.

The input data was times from specific driving conditions, acceleration/coasting to specific revs, plus other vehicle data like weight, wheel circumference, gear ratios etc. All readily obtainable data. The beauty was that air resistance was factored out by balancing acceleration against coasting, both in gear and in neutral. It was actually a very simple, but ingenious way of getting power and torque.

I had the article, but through moving house a few times I have lost/waylaid it. I have tried quite a few Google searches but no dice. Unfortunately my memory is failing me and my maths skill are also too limited to recreate this method.

I would appreciate a few pointers either to the original article/method or a similar method for getting a power and torque curve without going on a dino, or getting an acceleration meter.

Several websites have collections of calculators that may be of help. Here are a couple:

Thanks for the response so far. That would make for some reading.
