Koken Barber Chair Repair

02/19/2012 10:11 PM

Hi! I am restoring a "1910" Koken Barbers Chair from the ground up... In the process of tearing the chair completley apart I had to cut, twist & extract a lot of the screws & bolts out of the brackets, etc.. & when a chair is of this age. There's No~Way some of them will come out as they where put in over 100 years ago. Even after soaking them & heating them, they are too far gone...

With this being said, Does anyone know where to find these screws & bolts that once fit into these chairs? Some look like they are almost a carriage bolt look? You can buy some of the screws & bolts for the chairs at your local hardware stores. But! there are some that they just don't make (or) have? I'd like to find them in a Stainless Steel material (if) possible. That way, they'll come out easier the next time if need be?

Thanks,

Mike

You're going to have to size the screws and bolts you need, with drawings of heads, or description if regular stuff...There are templates sold at the hardware store for this purpose, you can determine the size and threads per inch with this method...so gather up the pieces and carry on...If you don't have any pieces, then I guess trial and error is the way to go... You might find some info here...

Chops,

I have noticed that the hardware from that period can be very diverse. I suggest that you look at automotive or farm equipment restoration sites for hardware. People do a lot of restoration on old cars and farm equiment and used hardware will probably be more reasonable than new odd sizes.

It is mesmerizing how people are attracted to barbers' chairs ... I personally can't grab the point. Lucky us, electric chairs are not so fashionable ...

I had a long list of exactly how to get the exact parts you need, but I accidentally deleted it by hitting the wrong key. Sorry. But thanks anyway for the opportunity to help you find these parts. It was fun.

Make a list, take photos and bring samples to an industrial fastener supplier (nuts and bolts shop)

They will tell you whether they are still available or not and how much they or suitable substitutes might be.

Can you post some photos of those you believe may be hard to replace?

You could always make some replicas if you are super serious.

Off the top of my head, Rockford, Grainger, and MSC all have good coverage of bolts and hardware in SS. But, you will have to identify the bolts that you have. Many auto parts stores have bolt checking fixtures that will help you to determine the diameter, and thread count, or thread pitch. The on line catalogs will help you to identify the types of head on the bolts. Good luck, and post some pictures.

Hey! Thanks guys for all the inputs. I'm going to head over to a machine shop that does Hydraulic work. They can just about make anything I think that I'll need. Thanks again everyone...
