Cannot Detect Source of Leak

02/21/2012 7:56 AM

Cummins K-19 marine diesel leaking water on side of engine. Does not leak when idle or moderate throttle. However, when full throttle engine begins to leak. Prior to the leak engine ran hot due to day tank water line clogged. Engine stopped running. Rocker arm inside valve cover was found to have come loose. Repaired rocker arm and water line. Engine starts with no problem, sounds good, however signs of water leaking on side of engine is evident when throttle up.

Crack? Freeze plug? Warped head?

Make sure everything is dry. Add some coolant dye to the coolant. Run engine with a person observing for source of leak. If it's dark in the engine compartment, you can get dye that glows under UV light. Once the source of the leak is determined, you will know what to fix.

Throw a can of stop-leak in the radiator. You don't have much to loose at this point.

Those quick fixes for cars are usually not a good idea for boats.

When they get stranded, it's not on the side of the road.

You ran the engine hot - You may have cracked a head.

At full throttle it begins to leak which indicates to me that there is most likely a hair-line crack somewhere.

If you want to find the leak and repair it, I suggest that you clean the side of the engine where the leak is evident of all oil, grease, and dirt.

Set up adequate lighting using care to prevent getting electrocuted due to the light getting wet.

Or better yet, if you have a closed loop exchange system, go with the UV option that Kram suggested.

Put on your hearing protection, position yourself at the proper angle to see the area of leakage and have the skipper take her out and crank her up.

Look for water/coolant leakage.

If all else fails and again if you have a closed loop exchange system, take Lyn's suggestion and add stop-leak for a temporary fix.

Clean it up, paint it white, put red coolant dye in, pull engine, weld crack, sell, get new engine, go home...

Side of engine is a very broad location specification.

You will be able to see exactly where it is coming from without any special coolant additives. If you can't describe the exact place where water is leaking from in words then take a photo or two or more (you can never take too many photos) and post those that show it the best.

Post some photos of the boat too. Boats are cool.

What is your location?
