If you are deleting files, then you are writing to the drive...

What are the symptoms...as in...what makes you think it is "write-protected"?

Maybe it's just broken?

1. Remove USB drive
2. Start REGEDIT
3. Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\StorageDevicePolicies
(if the above key does not exist, create it)
4. Double click the key "WriteProtect" from the right side and set the value to 0 (zero)
(again, if the first key doesn't exist then this value will need to be created)
5. Press OK
6. Exit REGEDIT
7. Restart computer
8. Re-connect USB drive

This should fix it (unless it really is one of those cheap knock-offs, then the problem exists on the thumb drive).
