Rejuvenating Rubber Refrigerator Seals

03/16/2012 2:42 AM

My draft refrigerator seals are getting stiff. I was considering softening them by wiping them down with brake fluid.

Does anyone have an opinion or suggestion?

You can use a silicon spray, but it depends how far gone they are....You can also buy gasket replacement sets...I wouldn't use brake fluid or any petroleum product...

'Armor-all' is a good product, seems to clean and protect plastics.

How about Waxoyl? It's claimed to stop rubber cracking.

brake fluid will probably turn them into a sticky mess. You can test with one drop on the top of the door??

Replacement gaskets are a common item.

Your seals are not made of rubber. They are a vinyl compound. Your best bet is to contact the manufacturer of the Refrigerator and ask their technical department. The suggestion of using Armoral is probably the best suggestion so far. I worked as a sales person for General Electric appliances and found that most companies are willing to go out of their way to be helpful

You ere not rejuvenating your lungs...

Change the seals !! It is better to seal the refrigerator with proper elastic seals...
