Mobile 4 Port USB Hub

03/17/2012 11:22 PM

Bought this portable mobile hub, thinking I could use it to charge multiple iPhone, iPad, iPod applications. I plugged it in only to find out it will not charge a single application. It plugs in to my charger via USB. What can I do to get this to work to charge more than 1 device. Is there a site I could go to to find a wiring diagram? Thank you, Sawdust

What type of charger are you plugging into? It may not be wired for multiple charge current requirement, typically 500ma output...Does it work plugged into computer, or plug adapter in car?

Unfortunately you can't do what you want, the design spec for an unpowered USB hub is 500ma total draw through all the ports combined. You need a "powered hub" that has a separate power supply to provide the extra current that a combination of those devices require.

It does have a connection for and external power source. I just want to be able to have one area setup to charge a few devises at one time with out using multiple electrical outlets. I really do not need the male USB connector if this will work thought he other connection. It is rated the same as my IPad power supply.

Are you plugged into a computer, or just trying and use it with its own Power Supply? The reason I asked this is that I use my laptop when I'm traveling to charge my cell phone. I had to install drivers in the computer before the cell phone would charge off the USB Port.

I've also gotten a message unauthorized charger when I plug a generic charger into my phone, apparently some devices require communication and authorization from their charging devise. So if you're attempting to use it free standing you might try plugging into a computer and installing the necessary drivers.

I did connect the hub to my computer and it did charge the IPhone. It still does not charge the IPad. Didn't before either. Just like to tinker , but don't want to ruin anything.

That is normal for PCs and older MAC computers. The ports on older Macs and a lot of PCs limit the current from USB ports to 1/2 amp. The wall charger supplied with the iPad outputs 2 amps. The PC will slowly charge your iPad with the iPad asleep when you can't see the screen...

Just some troubleshooting suggestions. If you have not tried plugging the iPad directly into the USB Port on the computer try that. Obviously this won't solve your problem but possibly you give you a clue.

When you're using a hub obviously you are sharing the USB Ports capacity for instance the data transfer rate is that of a single port. Just a thought, you may have to install the drivers for the iPad manually.

From your previous post the hub has it's own Power Supply, make sure that supply is functioning, I have found when tinkering sometimes when changing things around I overlooked something I've already checked.

Please continue to keep us posted , I haven't tried charging multiple devices through a hub yet so I'm very interested in your results.

the ipad display draws so much power when you turn it on, to see the battery status, it says "not charging" if you turn OFF the display and leave it plugged into that USB port i bet in a few hours you will see the battery is charging

The iPad requires 1A to be able to charge. The USB specification only provide 500mA, so you will not be able to charge. Apple just uses the USB plug form factor to charge, so you can use it to do data transfer too. You can't do both when connected to a PC or (powered) hub.

What you need is a multi output USB charger. These do exist, but are pretty hard to find. Just fire up Google and do a search on New Egg, Deal Extreme or similar site.

To be honest, any moderate electronics guy can build you one of these things. You just need multiple 5V 1A outputs with a specific resistance on the data channels. More info here: http://thecustomgeek.com/2011/08/03/charging-an-ipad-iphone-or-ipod/

There are 4 port x 1 amp chargers on the market. I found one at Staples that included 4 different international plugs. Your iPad will need a 2 amp charger to reach full charge.
