How to Conduct a Soil Profile Test Using Bore Hole Method for Civil Construction

03/18/2012 1:57 AM

Construction industry is in its booming stage in Sri lanka and we experience more and more inquiries for soil profile investigation and load bearing capacity - soil tests for civil construction works for simple residencial buldings to multi storied condomoniums in ordinery sandy soils, laterite soils and in filled lands and marshy lands .

We need to have a methodology of sampling with low initial cost for equipments and accurate methodology to avoid un necessary leagal problems which may arize as a resut of construction failuers.

can some one propose such methodology and reporting fprmat for the same.

Here's a link to get you started, sort of. This is only one example of geotechnical exploration called Split Spoon Test (SPT). Please notice that no ASTM Specification information was provided in this Wikipedia blog. I can provide you with that information later on, if needed.

You do know how to search the Internet don't you?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Geotechnical_engineering

Am I assuming correctly from your question that you have taken no or limited soil mechanics courses, or you have a limited Civil Engineering education and degree?

All-in-all, IF you did possess such a degree and experience you would already the answers to your query.

Sorry about the confusion I provided! Unfortunately, I was in a great hurry and fed you partially incorrect information earlier!

Yes, STP = Standard Penetration Test. Usually you use a Shelby Split Spoon Tester (tube).

Here's a very good free source of Geotechnical Information paid for by the US Taxpayer and used around the world:

http://140.194.76.129/publications/eng-manuals/

Go to the US Army Corp of Engineers publication website using the aforementioned URL and select the following Engineering Manual (EM):

EM 1110-1-1804 "Geotechnical Investigations, ENG 1836, ENG 1836A".

You can download the file, but beware it is very big at 28.5 MB. This particular EM will cover nearly everything you even wanted to learn about subsurface soils investigation, short of buying Joesph E. Bowles legendary textbook that I mentioned previously!

Most of what you need starts at Chapter 5.

Good luck!

Also, obtain a copy of "Foundation Design and Analysis" by Joesph E. Bowles P.E.. It is the geotechnical bible for Civil Engineers. You can download older e-file copies of it from the web if you search long and hard.

Read it. Study it. Learn from it.
