Electric motor thru bolt (hardware)

05/07/2007 8:38 AM

Need some help here!

I've got an old (25yrs) Minn-Kota trolling motor that needs thru bolts. No service centers carry them anymore, leastwise I haven't been able to find any. Most electric motors have thru bolts to hold them together. Where do the motor makers get them? I'm wanting a 10-32 x 8.5", screw with a washer hex head.

Make one. Go to the hardware store and buy threaded rod, nuts and washers. 5 min. job and you've got bolts. For the head, jam one nut against another nut.

That's pretty much what I was going to say, but I'll add:

1. Since it's for marine use, spring the extra bucks for stainless steel.

2. On one end put a couple of nuts so you can hold it in a vice without damaging the threads. Leave a couple mm (0.1") of rod sticking up past the upper nut, and peen the end over. Now back the nut closest to the peen 'till it hits the peened end and you've got a very reliable head. Use a hand drill to rotate the rod to remove the other nut.

Best they can do is 10" then you'll have to cut it off, but as stated don't use in Marine.

OK. I see I'm not the only person in CR-4 with a degree in Af*!(@n Engineering!

What I'm looking for is a source for screws of the desired configuration. Somebody makes them and motor manufacturers use them. Where does one get them?

McMaster-Carr, do not have what I need (except stainless all-thread), and I don't want to use the all-thread.

Pull out the stops, Guys!
