Soft Starter Communications

03/27/2012 9:00 AM

It seems that many soft starters don't have communications capabilities and other soft starters have optional communications modules. What benefits could I get from having communications capabilities with my soft starters? I will be controlling pumps and fans.

If you have a higher level control system, such as SCADA or a DCS or even a PLC that is doing the control, you can eliminate the hard-wired control interface to that control system. If you don't have that, there is not much point in having the communications. That's why it's optional in a lot of units.

Communication capabilities are required when you want to remotely monitor the analog data like motor current, temperature of Soft starter, starting and running curve etc.
