SYNCHRONIZATION PROBLEM IN HYDRO POWER STATION

03/28/2012 7:15 AM

Before i have honour to announce that:I have been reported this problem to our wonderfully /Helpfully website CR4 .globalspec but was Mechanical Engineering Section (bcos probs was purely connected to mechanical), now i put this probs to this section so that Electrical careers,Electrical Engineers ,specialist and Experts of this website/section to help me through probls now is connected to both secton:``We are running machine (Hydo Power Plant 2 machine @34MW=64MW with separate Governor during starting it seems Governor alternate from auto to manual...and when u put Low Load let say below 30MW, machine Load apper to drop or flactuate from low to high then suddenly trip by overspeed alarm. but when Load is below 12MW to 20MW and above 30MW such phenomena not happen except in those low Load cavitation problems most likely to happen which is danger to machine but were getting trouble bcos its not all the time we have prently of water so were always suppose to shunt down one unit or drive both machine with the cavitation risk.Preciate if someone suggest technical reasons why this happen???Is there need to acquire cost of new Governor ???

But Main Point Now:By carrying the same problems 24x7 a week, monthly and now year without solution and any technical helper from manufacture, Now were getting problems to synchronize machine..sometimes it takes very Long time before get out (Trip with overspeed alarm) or so many trials needed to put machine in Grid system(only some operator can do).Preciate if someone suggest me to get out of this problems and Governor is not so much old cos we have another machine with Governor stored since 1964(ENGLSH ELECTRIC TYPE but we still have no probs but this one was almost new machine 2005 installation)

Best Rgds

Very interesting problem. It is the problem, which can be solved only by the team spirit.

A team of MEchanical Engineer + Electrical Engineer + Instrumentation engineer.

Further, with very fresh mind, without keeping the prejudice / pre opinions that Governors are new, & must be working OK should be keep.

1. Over speed fault indicates improper KW sharing - related to Governor droop charecteristics may be checked. if OK, then load sharing instruments error should be checked.

So, Instrument Engineer will certify for Load sharing instruments performance.

Electrical Engineer shall certify for Proper operations of the Governors & related electricals / motorised POTS etc...

Now, if problem persists, Mechanically, Smooth, jerk free flow of Fuel is must.

This problem will be solved by joint efforts.

Still problem persists, Then check AVR - or rather replace AVR of both the Alternators, ( it takes more time to synchronize, Droops of AVRs at 15% - 50% - 100% may not be matching properly.

Just to indicate, that for 2 MW FO system, we had solved the similar problems.

In our case, we had ultimately replaced AVRs of bothe the alternators , which seemingly were looking absolutely alright ! but in above kind of load conditions, miserably failed without any indications ! in our case, reverse power fault was coming & longer synchronizing period !

best of luck

Harry Potter has already mentioned most important points and the essential strategy that is required to solve the problem. I would like to add a few points:

As already said, this certainly appears to be Governor related issue. It is worth checking

  • Droop setting
  • feedback signals to governor from the speed sensor and the power (MW) sensor
  • Being Hydro-turbine, Water nozzles (for any choking etc.) and the water admission valve (in to the turbine) for their health etc.
