Quantify Welding Tasks

03/28/2012 8:24 AM

Are there any standard norms for amount of welding per hr , in terms of kg of consumabke used per hour / meter length of welding done per hour for different welding processes such as SMAW, MMAW, GTAW, CO2 WELDING of CS and SS plates ?

We need to estabish norms for a Heavy Fabrication Unit producing shell & tube heat exchangers, columns and tanks required for Oil & Gas segments

I don't think you'll find exactly the information and format you're looking for, as it would probably be proprietary information from your competitors.

Estimator's Piping Manhour Manual by John S. Page, while geared toward piping, does have some information on general welding, if I recall, and could be of some use.

Article that may be of interest

You have to use formulas, there are too many variables....

It is not simple, but I have done this numerous times in developing "Arc Time" standards for each arc welding process. Basically, you develop a spreadsheet of weld joint and weld process variables that yield your units of measure. For example, GMAW Spray welding carbon steel, 1G position, 60 deg. Vee groove weld joint with backing with .125" root gap, .25" thick plate, with a wire feed speed of 300 ipm will weld at a rate of 5.22 ipm and the weld volume in the joint is .09 cubic inches/inche of joint. If you want to discuss this more contact GEA Consulting. Hope this helps. Bill
