Your brain may hurt after you read all of those link above. Virtual memory is where data is stored on some other device, as in a file on the hard drive. It simply refers to information you may not be able to retain in random access memory because there is not enough room.

Memory is a confusing term because there is more than one type. The memory that your computer or processor uses to do its basic functions (so that you can do other things, like type on the keyboard or display information) is your operating system at the system level. This memory is permanent and can not be erased.

Then you have some "firmware" memory which keeps data even when the power is turned off. Finally, you have RAM or random access memory which consists of programs and data that you use as an operator. All of this memory is organized by locations which tends to be in groups called pages. That term may be processor dependent or system dependent as in 16 bit wide data, 32 bit wide, or 64 bit wide.

Each system has a different page length, depending on the ability of the addressing hardware to access it. Some areas are reserved but most is available for your use.

Sometimes when computers "lock up" it is because one program overwrote memory that another program was using. That causes programs to become hopelessly lost.

Hope that helped!
