04/09/2012 2:46 AM

Can anyone explain what a positive and negative grounding means and how it is useful?

Grounding is basically provided for the protection against short circuit or any faults, to prevent the damage of the device. For this the device is connected to the earth. It also acts as a return path in case of electrical supply from power stations etc.

Happy now , I can say that in positive grounding the positive terminal is connected to ground other than giving supply to the device, and in negative grounding the negative terminal is connected to earth.Correct me if wrong

Now i wnt to what will the effect on doing so, and where can be this applied?

My goodness ! You require to study grounding/earthing in some depth. Your idea of what is grounding, i regret to say, is completely wrong.

Positive and negative grounding has been around a long time. We use to see positive grounds used more back in the early days of farm equipment, and some auto's as well. The thought was (I believe) was to protect the system from inadvertent shorts. Do they work any different, not really.

Some of the old aircraft electrical systems back then also used this positive ground system in their electrical system as well. Same thought process there as well.

The only time I have ever seen it to be a problem is when someone who is not experienced with these systems hooks them up wrong, and it makes a very bad mess out things in a hurry.

That's right, but the OP seems to be combining vehicle electrics (ref to +ve and -ve ground) and mains electric (power stations.....)

No wonder lyn was a little sarky in #3!

Most vehicles are wired negative earth these days, Boss. It is useful in avoiding galvanic corrosion in parts of the bodywork.

"Grounding is basically provided for the protection against short circuit"

No it isnt. thats what FUSES are for. If you want to substitute a ground for a fuse, make sure to replace the fuse with an equivalent size steel bolt.

Is this a ground for positive or negative AC?

Postive grounding is used for controlling transmutative reflux capacitors in mitigating of flux stress environoments. We dont do much of that these days. Reflux capacitors have been replaced by nodal storage membranes of the 12th order.
