Is 304SS or 316SS tubing better for use with dry chlorine?

I think carbon steel is OK if it's dry (liquid or gas chlorine).

I worked on a water treatment plant in UK in early 90s where we renovated a chlorine system. Don't know when the original was installed, but it comprised 2 pressure vessels for liquid chlorine, each about 2.5m dia x 4m long ie enough chlorine to kill everybody for miles around! Liquid chlorine was piped around the site in 2" CS pipes, laid in covered concrete ducts. The pipes were completely rusted on the outside. Health and safety would have had a fit if they'd seen it.

We replaced it with something safer, but it had worked OK for a number of years.

Chlorine suppliers should tell you what's suitable. I'm fairly sure the tonne containers used with chlorine are made of unlined carbon steel.

Geeee, I thought it was Black Iron pipe for chlorine gas service.

I'll have to look it up......and thumb through my chlorination book. This may take a while guys and gals.
