Off Grid 12VDC/220VAC Inverter

04/19/2012 4:15 AM

Hi

I have an off grid inverter 12V/220V/600W (modified sine wave type), battery bank of 100Ah/12v/c20 wet solar battery and PV solar panels of 150W. From inverter's user manual, instructs to ground an inverter for the earth terminal shown, I have done so, when you use an AC electric tester (the simple tester used to know if part of installation (domestic) is live), at the 220VAC side of it, at the neutral terminal, the tester lights up, as it do for live terminal. What might be the problem? And if so how to rectify it?

Modified sine wave is a harmonic mess with high (detectable) spikes, plus the terminal you are grounding is possibly the battery (-), and nothing to do with ANY grounding on output. That, is supposed to be floating, so no problem if you grounded one of the output rails, and see it not triggering testers. But I'd check for leak currents before even trying, and would only try it, If I had a reason (like powering a suffering from interferences or already ground-leaking appliance). S.M.

You say "the simple tester used to know if part of installation (domestic) is live)"

What sort of tester are you referring to ? do you mean a non contact voltage tester like a volt stick ?

If so most of the non contact voltage testers I have used will indicate AC voltage on neutral wires

Try using a multimeter you will get a more accurate reading

Yes,I mean this tester. But also I have used a multimeter,L to G it reads 143VAC and N to G it reads 143VAC,L to N reads 230VAC.The -VE terminal of a battery is Grounded.
